Also: if you’ve seen the misquote that Matt Smith supposedly says that there will never be a female Doctor, here’s what he actually said:
Matt: I never see that happening any time soon to be honest. I don’t think it will happen.
The Mary Sue: Because you’re not leaving us?
Matt: No. (because he’s not leaving us) And I’m not turning into a woman.

Noticing the Doctor Who tumblr reblogged a quote from my Matt Smith interview…

The Doctor’s Companion, to me, has always been the viewer-surrogate character, the one full of amazement, wonderment, taken by the elbow and ushered through the cosmos as they struggle adorably to understand the magnitude and awesomeness of the universe. Yet, there’s always the underlying trope of this passive sort of cared-for (yet capable when it counts) snowflake being patently female; the male counterpart (as we’ve recently met in the form of Mickey, Jack, Rory and other incidentals) gets to be the back-up hero, or the doofus maguffin to throw a disguise over the overt sexual hierarchy and give the girl someone to lord over as the Doctor lords over her so completely.
Frankly speaking, I don’t think we’ll be able to have a female Doctor until we can swallow a male Companion.
